Dangers of DIY Roof Repair: Why You Should Trust an Expert

Man with hard hat being careless falling from ladder onto concrete floor

We’re sure you’ve known at least one know-it-all handyman who thinks he can do it all. Busted pipes? He’ll fix it himself. Janky air conditioning? He’ll just Youtube it. Leaky roof? He’s got a ladder and a hammer, so he’ll save some money and patch it up no problem. Until…he calls you from the emergency room with a bill that made him pass out after seeing. El Paso Roofing does not recommend any DIY roof repair, because it can be dangerous and costly if done wrong. Here are just a few of the reasons why you should leave roof repair to the professionals.

A Small Hole Turned Big Problem

We’ve been fixing roof for 3 decades now, so we’ve seen pretty much every type of problem you can imagine. Sometimes we get clients who had a small leak in their roof, and decided that they could go and patch it themselves. More often than not, this results in an even bigger hole in the roof, and intense water damage below. When done incorrectly, roof repair can exacerbate the initial problem, and lead to a much costlier repair job. Areas of the roof can also be made weaker if you are careless, so it’s best to just not go up there.

Don’t Look Down

Working on a roof means being up high in the air. This may be self-explanatory, but roof repair means being in a deadly tango with gravity. Our roofers are the best in the business, and have all but tamed gravity’s pull when working on a roofing project. We don’t just go on the roof—we bring up shingles, tools, and other equipment up with us, making gravity more eager to slam us back down to Earth. If you don’t have training, though, you run the very likely risk of falling off the roof and being seriously injured, or worse. Don’t end up in the hospital like your handyman friend, call us so we can show you how we tango with lady gravity.

Contaminants

If you’re working on a really old roof, you may also run the risk of exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a naturally-occurring silicate material, and was extremely popular for homes from the mid 20th century up to the early 80’s. Asbestos is long and fibrous, and can cause a litany of lung issues if breathed in for extended periods of time. Mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis are all possible conditions that can arise from exposure to asbestos. If you feel your roof may contain asbestos, let us professionally remove the asbestos from your roof. Never chance it yourself, as trying to save now can cause severe and lasting health issues later.

Voided Warranty

If you get a roof replacement from us, we offer a ten-year warranty on that roof to cover any issues that may arise. However, if you try to repair the roof yourself, it will immediately void the warranty and exponentially increase the cost of repairs to any damages. If there are any issues with your roofing, don’t hesitate to let us know immediately so we can fix it under warranty.
